Thursday, at the INDY airport, Tina and I had the wonderful opportunity to meet Dr. Geoff Hammond and his lovely wife, Debbie. Geoff and Debbie were a tremendous blessing to us . . . they let us use their mobile baggage scale so that we could properly adjust the weight in our suitcase to weigh below the 50 pound minimum (See Pictures #2 & #3).  Geoff and Debbie went out of their way to help us! Also, they even remembered our names as we met with them again boarding the plane (about an hour later.)  . . . very impressive! The SBC is blessed to have Geoff and Debbie to represent us all!

• Picture #1: Tom Ascol’s perseverence paid off this year with his amendment to give the the Resolution #6 “baby”  some strength!
• Picture #2: Tom’s brother, Bill, sealed the Convention’s approval of Tom’s admendment when he stated:

  We need to make sure that the “baby” [resolution] has a Baptist identity!

• Picture #3: Ballots are raised to overwhelmingly approve the Yarnell/Ascol Amendments to the Resolution #6.
• Picture #4: Albert Mohler, in his SBTS report, reiterated the importance of the amended Resolution #6.
• Picture #5:  (We apologize for the blurry picture) Jerry Vines, now retired, made a motion to extend the Guidestone Q&A time. O.S. Hawkins jokingly called Vines’ motion “out of order” and stated that since Vines was retired, he had nothing else to do!

• Picture #9: Danny Akin delivered a powerful report from SEBTS. In his report, he stated how greatly the approval of Resolution #6 was needed and gave Southern Baptists some prudent applicatory remarks on how each SBC church can implement Regenerate Church Membership. Akin also addressed the rift between Non-Calvinists and Non-Arminians; he stated:

  There is enough room in the SBC for Calvinists of every point to comfortably coexist. The problems come from semi-Arminians who clash with Calvinists who have a chip on their shoulder[s]! . . . that has to stop! (Quote paraphrased by chadwick.)

• Picture #10 Charles Billingsly glorified the Lord in worship! As Billingsley sang, the front of the stage began to be filled with people. . . at first, we thought he had given an “altar-call“, but then we discovered that the only ones going to the “altar” were women with their cameras . . . to snap a picture of Billingsly! . . . chadwick’s wife, Dwight Easler’s wife, David Worley’s wife, Tom Ascol’s wife, Wade Burleson’s wife, and Wes Kenney’s wife all responded to  “Billingsley’s supposed altar-call! . . . with their cameras in hand!”   
• Pictures #11 & #12: Jerry Rankin gave a passionate report from the IMB. [Editor's Note: In the past, Rankin had always been soft-spoken and bland in his presentations. Yet, in this presentation, he spoke with a fervency and passion that we had never seen exhibited from Rankin! Our hearts were stirred from Rankin's heartfelf report!]

Tuesday Morning: SBC Founders’ Breakfast:

• Picture #4: Don Whitney opened up with the reading of Scripture from Psalm 130 and prayer.
• Picture #5: Eric Redmond expounded 2 Chronicles 34:8-32: Reclaiming Biblical Authority. Here are some choice quotes from Redmond’s excellent sermon:

  Assumed righteousness can be hidden by earnest devotion to God [This was King Josiah's case].

  Question: The question should not be what portion of the Book of the Law was recovered? But, how could the Book of the Law be lost by God’s people?

  How was the Book of the Law was lost?: 1)Kings did not read the Book of the Law. (Kingly work kept them from the Book) 2) Priests did not teach the Book of the Law. 3) Parents in Israel did not teach the Book to their children. (Teaching our children Catechisms  should be practiced in the home.) Learning the Book keeps us from re-inventng Christianity in each generation.

  Question: How did Israel become so complacent at the absence of the Law? 1) They became comfortable in mediocrity; they became comfortable in practices without any adherence to the Law of God. 2) They became complacent in God’s mercy and became indignant to His wrath. They had idols on every hill; they thought, ‘We must be alright in the sight of God.’ It was not until they recovered the Book that they became fearful of God’s judgment.

  We need to be confronted with God’s holiness! Meeting [numbers] goals should not be our aim . . . but being conformed to the image of God’s Son!  God’s wrath is upon all  who assume they are righteous apart from the Book.

   There is a need for Regenerated Church Membership . . . repentance is a Bibilcal word. When it comes to meaningful church membership, would we be willing to do what the Scripures say? Would we be willing to repent of our sins . . . no matter what they are? Is our righteousness based upon our numbers or obedience?

Tuesday Afternoon: Presidential Election Time

[Editor's Note: None of the nomination speeches were good . . . every one of them were duds! . . . except for the guy who nominated the Mulky fellow for 10th Vice President . . . if he would have nominate one of the presidential candidates, we would bet the farm that they would have been second to Johnny!]

The Three Nomination Speeches that BOMBED! :

3rd Place BOMB:

Junior Hill nominated Frank Cox for SBC President.  Junior dozed off a few times as he fought to stay awake in, seemingly, the most unexcited and uninspired time of his life! We wished Frank would have given Junior a NoDoze with a Starbuck’s coffee before he stepped up onto the platform!

2nd Place BOMB:

(ALSO BIGGEST SURPRISE OF THE DAY): Wade Burleson nominated Bill Wagner for SBC President. The only good thing about Wade’s nomination is: he was dressed sharp! We thought Wade looked very angry, as if he were preaching Jonathan Edwards’ sermon, Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.  The lady sitting beside us said, ” Yikes, that angry man scares me!” One toddler on the row behind us screamed out, “Mommy, is that the Boogie Man?” We believe if Wade would have been more natural and peaceful, rather than militant and grimace, Wagner could have gotten at least three more votes. Also, Wade used some sort of cheesy story about prehistoric fish eggs being frozen in a block of ice! . . . it went over like a lead balloon! 

1st Place BOMB:

Here is the Correct Answer  our Theory: Johnny blew it in the BP Questionaire . . . he sounded more like an Independent-Fundamental Baptist, rather than a Southern Baptist.

Let us explain what happened:

2) If you are elected, what would be your priority message for Southern Baptists?  . . .  I feel that the message of the Cooperative Program has spoken louder than the message of the Gospel . . . 

Johnny’s statement may be true and sincere . . . BUT . . . it was not the choice statement to make in seeking to obtain the SBC presidential crown! Also, Johnny’s statement may have drawn AMENS from the local pastors’ conference near Woodstock . . . but it went over like a lead balloon with the Establishment!

This time, Johnny has shot himself in the foot . . . we have live footage:

Here’s what went wrong:

Johnny forgot that he was responding to Will Hall, Editor of Baptist Press . . . he got his interviews mixed up and he thought he was responding to the Shelton Smith, Editor of the Sword of the Lord. This is the same rhetoric that you hear from an Independent/Fundamental/Rapture-Ready/1611 KJV-Totin’/Buzz-Cut Wearin’/ Holy . . . uh . . . grunt .  . . uh . . . screamin’ Baptist pastor who seeks to hijack the little SBC church he pastors, and make it Independent/Fundamental Baptist.  [HT: hottub]

The  SBC’s Founding Fathers differed on the Landmark issue. They considered “alien emersion” to be a local church issue rather than a denominational issue.

Here is an interesting quote from an SBC history book:

“An attack was made on the Southern Seminary because one of its first professors, Dr. William Williams, was in favor of the acceptance of alien immersions. Dr. [James] Boyce was against such acceptance, but he was unwilling to make the question a test of fellowship. From the beginning of the Seminary, he was unwilling to have the institutions committed to either side of the question.”

According to the mail card, Catt, a Georgian, is giving fellow Georgian, Johnny Hunt the primo time slot for the pastors’ conference! On Sunday evening, Hunt was listed as the second speaker . . . this is the time when every attendee is seated and the spotlight is the brightest!

Yet, after checking the website, we saw that the schedule has been changed to where “Johnny Be Seen” will be in the first slot.

Again, only fellow Georgian Peter Lumpkins knows why the changed slot was implemented! 

Our critics will quickly seek to defend Johnny by reminding us that Johnny has preached at every pastors’ conference for the last 20 years, seemingly; also, Johnny was probably booked directly after last year’s conference. Nonetheless, THIS IS STILL Political OVERKILL! . . . we cannot help but to think that the splintered and crippled ”Denominational Machine” is still trying to rekindle some political magic straight from the CR’s playbook! . . . this tactic proves that the “Machine” is grasping at straws to reestablish its stronghold on the SBC.

Dr. Johnny Hunt has announced his willingness to be nominated president of the SBC when it convenes in Indianapolis this June.  Now, Hunt is being nominated in a field crowded with candidates . . . and even one from his own state convention (now, this really makes you go: “HMMM?”)! 

 Notice this interesting statement from 2006:

Since Johnny Hunt decided last month not to allow his name to be placed in nomination for president of the Southern Baptist Convention, speculation has been increasing about the possible nomination of another Georgia Baptist pastor for SBC president. [Bold Emphases Mine]

Way back in 2006 (before Hunt withdrew), it seems that Cox, out of courtesy for a fellow-Georgian, did not throw his hat into the ring.

NOW, in 2008, the shoe is on the other foot, but Hunt does the unthinkable, and throws his hat into the ring, alongside Cox’s [hat]!

Let us explain:

Hunt’s church is only a “stone’s throw” from Cox’s church (49.8 miles).  What the problem is between these two Georgians, only Peter Lumpkins (also a fellow-Georgian) knows  (Peter is the psychic blogger of the SBC)! (Call 1-800-PETER KNOWS)

Regardless of the reason, here is the message Hunt is sending Cox: 

A 49.8 mile drive-by slap-by . . . so much for Southern Hospitality!

Moreover, as we see it, Frank Cox is a cog in the SBCPTB (Southern Baptist Convention’s Powers That Be) (aka: Denominational Machine); Johnny Hunt is ALSO a cog in the Denominational Machine!

Seemingly, with these two cogs out of sync, the Denominational Machine is on the verge of collapsing!

Conclusively, with Hunt and Cox [* and Willis?] splitting the SBCPTB’s vote two [*possibly three] ways, one of the NON-Baptist Identity Club “Dissenting” candidates (Wagner, Drake, Dark Horse #1, or Dark Horse #2) WILL will the election!!!
